Former FCKC Coach Leaves National Team After Three Years

Decision Comes After Disappointing World Cup Performance

Vlatko Andonovski has resigned as head coach of the United States women's national team, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Saturday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the resignation has not been announced publicly. Andonovski's departure comes after the USWNT's disappointing performance at the 2023 World Cup, where they were eliminated in the semifinals by England.

Andonovski was hired as USWNT coach in October 2019, replacing Jill Ellis. He previously coached the NWSL's FC Kansas City and Seattle Reign.

Under Andonovski, the USWNT won the 2020 SheBelieves Cup and the 2021 CONCACAF W Championship. They also reached the semifinals of the 2021 Olympics.

However, the USWNT's performance at the 2023 World Cup was a major disappointment. The team was eliminated by England in the semifinals, and Andonovski was criticized for his tactics and player selection.

Andonovski's resignation leaves the USWNT without a head coach just months before the 2024 Olympics. The USSF is expected to begin a search for a new coach immediately.

The USWNT is the most successful women's soccer team in the world, having won four World Cups and four Olympic gold medals. They are currently ranked No. 1 in the FIFA World Rankings.
