European Legend Prefers Swinging Up

Monty reveals why he's a 'man of the old school'

European legend prefers 'swinging up'

Hall of Famer shares favourite drill for hitting straighter drives

Colin Montgomerie has revealed why he considers himself a "man of the old school" when it comes to his golf swing.

The eight-time European Tour Order of Merit winner, who was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2013, prefers to "swing up" on the ball rather than the more modern technique of "swinging down".

"I'm a man of the old school, so I prefer swinging up," Montgomerie said. "I think it gives me more control and consistency."

Montgomerie also shared one of his favourite drills for hitting straighter drives.

"I put a tee peg in the ground about six inches behind the ball," Montgomerie said. "Then I take my normal stance and swing. The goal is to hit the tee peg on the downswing. This helps me to keep my swing on plane and hit the ball straighter."
