DIY Motorcycle Stand: Step-by-Step Guide and Free Plans

Build Your Own Stand for Easy Motorcycle Maintenance

Materials and Tools You'll Need

Materials:

  • One sheet of plywood (1200 x 2400 x 19 mm or 4 x 8 x 34)
  • Seven lengths of dressed pine (90 x 45 x 2400 mm or 2 x 4 x 8)
  • Screws (10G x 75 mm) or nails (at least 50)

Tools:

  • Circular saw or miter saw
  • Drill
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Clamps

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Cut the Plywood and Rails

Cut the plywood to the desired platform size. For this project, the plywood is cut to 1200 x 2400 mm (4 x 8 ft).

Cut the dressed pine into the following lengths:

  • 4 long rails: Width of plywood - 2 x thickness of rails (360 mm for this project)
  • 2 short rails: Width of plywood - 2 x thickness of rails - 2 x distance between rails (for example, 360 mm - 2 x 45 mm - 2 x 100 mm = 170 mm)
Step 2: Assemble the Platform

Attach the long rails to the plywood using screws or nails. Make sure the rails are centered on the plywood and flush with the edges.

Attach the short rails to the platform, perpendicular to the long rails. These rails will support the shelf (if you are adding one).

Step 3: Build the Shelf (Optional)

If you are adding a shelf, cut two additional long rails to the same length as the platform rails.

Attach the long shelf rails to the short platform rails using screws or nails.

Step 4: Finish the Stand

Sand any rough edges or splinters from the wood.

Apply a protective finish, such as paint or polyurethane, to the stand for durability.

Conclusion

Building your own motorcycle stand is a great way to save money and customize it to your specific needs. With the right materials and tools, you can easily follow these step-by-step instructions to create a safe and sturdy stand for your motorcycle.
